Since its inception in 1701, Yale has been a world leader in producing thought leaders and change agents. The 21st century is no exception. Yale continues to be a conduit for global conversations and change. Last summer of 2012 in Accra, Ghana, the Yale Club of Ghana in association with the Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale and the Association of Yale Alumni hosted a strategic planning forum and symposium, Building Partnerships and Connections in the African Diaspora, seeking to organize Yale alumni and thought leaders throughout The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in order to develop a sustainable plan for organizing ECOWAS Yale alumni while bridging the gap in the Diaspora for strategic partnerships.
Building upon the success of that first symposium, the 2013 conference will bring together established and emerging leaders in industry, academia and the arts. As many believe that the 21st Century will be the African Century, it is imperative that institutions like Yale engage on the forefront of conversation, dialogue and thought leadership for West Africa, Africa and the Diaspora. Yale is unique among American colleges and universities in taking the lead on such an endeavor, positioning itself with the Yale Club of Ghana to be a conduit for world ideas related to the future success of Africa and her descendants.
