The discovery by world-renowned archaeologist Nicholas Conard of a six centimeter mammoth ivory figurine pushed the origin of figurative art back thousands of years. The “Venus of Hohle Fels,” sculpted over 40,000 years ago, is the earliest depiction of a human being ever found. Conard, director of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology at University of Tübingen, will discuss his ongoing efforts to uncover our species’ earliest creative inspiration, production, and pursuits.
