João Vale de Almeida is a senior European Union diplomat who has recently been appointed as EU Ambassador to the United Nations from 16 October 2015.
Ambassador Vale de Almeida previously served as the first EU Ambassador to the United States of America, from 2010 to 2014. In Washington, he actively engaged in strengthening EU/U.S. relations and was critical to the launching of negotiations of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). more
Chubb Fellowship Lecture

The Chubb lecture will be held on November 30, 2016, in Burke Auditorium in Kroon Hall, 195 Prospect Street, at 4:30 pm. Doors will open for seating at 4:10 pm. The lecture is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a reception for Ambassador Vale de Almeida with Timothy Dwight Fellows at the Timothy Dwight Head of College house. This reception is by invitation only. Following the reception, Head of College, Mary Lui will host a dinner in Ambassador Vale de Almeida’s honor for Timothy Dwight students and other invited Yale students and guests.
The Chubb Fellowship is based and administered through Timothy Dwight College, one of Yale’s twelve residential colleges. The Master of Timothy Dwight College supervises the carrying out of the mandate of the Chubb Fellowship and is assisted by the Associate Chubb Fellow. Master Mary Lui currently directs the program, assisted by Associate Chubb Fellow Susan Wigler. It is designed to foster among the undergraduates of Timothy Dwight College and Yale University an interest in public affairs.
The Chubb Fellow usually makes a public address on a topic of special interest, open to the entire Yale and New Haven communities. Though the lecture is an important component of the visit, the main purpose is to have the Fellow participate as fully as possible in the life of the College and of the Yale community. The format of the visit enables the Chubb Fellow to meet with groups of students and faculty during a meal, reception or seminar.
Although the activities of the program focus on the students of Timothy Dwight College, its principal beneficiary, the impact is felt throughout the student body of Yale University and in the community at large. The response of Yale students to the program continues to be enthusiastic, as it provides a unique opportunity to interact in a relaxed setting, to discuss both national and international issues and the challenges and pleasures of public life. This personal contact is what differentiates the Chubb Fellowship visit from other university lectureship invitations. It makes for a rewarding experience for all those in the Yale community who have contact with the Chubb Fellow.
